14 October – I could be happy and contented

Do you ever think that the wrong song won? Obviously you do, although Mr Hacksaw of this parish is right in saying the right song always wins. Even if you don’t agree with it. Now back in 1968, it could be argued that the wrong song did win, and there have been many many conspiracy theories about whether a certain other song was robbed of a win.

That song was one of the songs by today’s birthday boy Harry Rodger Webb, better known as Cliff Richard. He was the home entrant in a cavernous venue in London, and there was a very partisan audience. But it was not to be. Cliff had to settle for one of the UK of stuff’s many second places. And then he tried again five years later…

Cliff is 77 today.
