Barbed Bosnians

Dalal & Deen feat. Ana Rucner and Jala at a Meet & Greet during the Eurovision Song Contest 2016 in Stockholm.

Ooh Bosnia! And Herzegovina. In fact, there’s so much going on here between them it’s difficult to know where to start with this. I fancied this may be a hot mess, and I’m not wrong. It starts with Ana on the electric cello, sporting what appears to be a Bacofoil cape. Dala’s also wrapped in one: oven-ready Bosnian, anyone? Deen’s in a pair of golden shoes: well, we are in the heartland of the Herreys. Deen and Dala are separated Chanee & N’Evergreen style-ee, only not with a translucent screen but with – wait for it – a barbed wire fence! These star-crossed lovers emote, reaching their hands through this allegorical barrier to unintentionally comedic effect, never to be able to transcend the divide between their fates. Until later in the song when they just step around it.

Before long Jala’s in, stomping all over the place all butch and rugged. I’ve just read the translation of the rap over at Eurovision.tv: it’s all about being trapped as if in a perpetual roulette wheel, realising that the woman he covets will never bear his children and their relationship is doomed to tragedy. I’m not convinced Deen and Dala’s will either but for an entirely different reason…

This does make you sit up and pay attention mind, and despite everything it’s not dreadful. I think this might be too niche to qualify, though it will be helped by some neighbourly support.
