I’m not getting Azerbaijan like the rest of the assembled throng appear to be. This was the first time I’d seen it all the way through and I was prepared to be wowed. I wasn’t. I mean, it’s well presented and everything, and Farid’s vocal is very good, but it wasn’t earth-stopping, or anywhere close. Top 10, but not the winner.
Finland on the other hand has had me completely reassessing my views. Coming after Farid this feels fresh and fun. She’s using every trick in the book during her set-piece choreography, with costume changes, wind machines and fireworks galore. And a same-sex kiss. It is very jolly indeed. I can see this doing big business, and even tilting for a place on the podium. And I never thought I’d be saying that a couple of months ago. The only question is that we’ve had brash bouncy numbers like his before that have finished 17th or thereabouts. Will Krista buck the trend?
