Hungary – literally taking it literally

Nick: Meanwhile, in a bid to win this year’s Most Unpredictable Staging award, the stage backdrop for Hungary’s song, Candlelight, is awash with – and stop me if you’re ahead of me here – but it’s absolutely awash with thousands, literally hundreds, of small otters.

Nah, just kidding, it’s candles.

I caught myself humming One Day In Your Life by Michael Jackson while it was on. I don’t know if this means anything. It seems nice, and there’s a bit towards the end that I don’t think I recognise. It seems very nice. I’m not convinced that it seems quite nice enough, though. Perfectly nicely sung though, and that’s just on the first run through.

Franko:  Slightly old fashioned and MOR but simple and pleasant after the previous excess it might pick up a vote or two. It’s well sung and unlike many of the others, viewers aren’t going to be struggling to know where to look. I’m not saying it will win or even finish in the top 10 but it could well qualify simply because of it’s pleasantness and because most voters are going to be slightly confused after seeing this year’s fare. Sometimes less is more.

Phil: I have heard the words “That is the best of the day” floating around… and I am finding it pretty hard to disagree. Cheesy (mmmmmm cheese…) sings this song very well, and like last years Hungarian entry, they seem to have “got” this contest. You don’t need big gimmicks all the time – you also need a strong song.

From the first day I heard this – I had it as a possible, and now i suspect it is walking into the semi final especially since she is doing a verse in Hungarian (which the song sounds better in) and it is set simply and is in total contrast to some of them that has come before and will come after it..

Watch out for this one Europe.
