Norway has thrown me off balance

It doesn’t take much to throw me off balance, mind. Getting out of the shower on Sunday threw me off balance. You should *see* the bruise, honestly.

But Norway has definitely put me off my stride. You know the National final performance. He does his bit, sings his chorus, camera slowly pans round, and reveals that as well as Mørland on stage, there’s also…

HANG ON WHAT THE HELL’S BONNIE LANGFORD DOING THERE? Deborah has had her hair done, long, frizzy, redhead and suddenly she’s the absolute spit of Mel Bush in 80s era Doctor Who. It’s genuinely uncanny.

Obviously, for most of Europe, that won’t completely kill the mood. But for this child of the 80s… Damn. Total ambience killer.

So, head pulled back together. The storytelling here is pure musical theatre in a good way. Deliciously non-explicit about what exactly they’re talking about. On-screen chemistry is exquisite. Staging uses the arena camera angles in ways we haven’t seen much of. I like a lot – but is this the time that Eurovision finally decides it really likes grown-up musical theatre? It’s had opportunities before and gone meh – indeed, Norway alone has finished between 13th and 17th with grown-up musical theatre on no fewer than 37 occasions over the years.

That is, and will be, the best of the day anyway.
