Mo’s Eurovision Countdown 2018 – Estonia

I’m gunning for one of the big favourites today. Might as well just come out and say it, I really don’t get the hype. One thing Eurovision winners have in common is they are actual songs. This isn’t.

Sensing the song might not be the star, the Estonian team have done their very best to make their entry all about the dress, and how the meanies at the state telly company won’t fork out €65,000 for a projector that would boost the reputation of the country worldwide. I’d lay odds this gets sorted long before Lisbon.

Every TV talent show has its dalliance with opera, and Eurovision is no exception. This is three minutes of vocal gymnastics lacking any pop sensibility – and if scheduled badly will come over as the interval act. It’s a pretty girl showing off a song that offers little in the way of a hook. Ten seconds after she’s done with her fancy frock and emoting, I’ve forgotten it.

It’s hard to see who will vote for it. Maybe the viewers will try to remember ‘the song that had the big dress’, but given this is Eurovision, some other bells and whistles might distract. The professional juries will mark it up for performer, but surely not for composition or hit potential.

When your dress wins the national final for you, it doesn’t bode well.
