Phil’s Eurovision Countdown – Part 38 – Serbia

Sar

Here we go again – Balkan Ballad mark 2 from everyone’s favourite Balkan county.  I don’t know what it is with these types of songs but I have an inbuilt revulsion mechanism which can be really quite disturbing and upon listening to this song that reflex started al most immediately.

This is Balkan by numbers and, in the same way that songs are schlager by numbers, this song knows which buttons to press to ensure that the ethnic box ticking exercise has been observed.  For the first 50-60 seconds it’s all a bit of a wailfest until the actual tune and lyric, or what passes for them, actually kicks in.  There are actually less than 30 words in the English translation of the lyric according to Eurovision.tv  and part of me says that this just makes the song lazy.  If you’re gonna go ethnic, go full on ethnic and ignore them 1980’s “thump thump” back beat.   I’m not sure what it’s trying to be but there is one thing it’s probably not going to be and that’s seen on a Saturday night.

Phil’s score – 3 points
