Eurovision likes a trier (to a degree anyway). Those unsung performers who often start as a backing singer and maybe, just maybe graduate to become the named act. Norway’s Håvard Gryting and Fernandes Lopes from Portugal couldn’t quite make the jump, and always stood in the shadows. Which brings us onto today’s birthday girl. Bettina Soriat started off as a very animated backing singer to George Nussbaumer. The following year, she got the gig and again very animated yet again. Animation wasn’t quite what the people of Europe were looking for that year. She finished 21st out of 25. Bettina is 49 today.
