14 July – And you ask yourself: Who might be behind them?

Have you ever wondered how many participants actually represent their home country? I have, and I’m sure there’s someone out there who could tell me. Do you think that, say, the Estonian song should always be sung by an Estonian?

There have been, of course, countries that could’t send their own entry because they couldn’t participant themselves. Australians for the UK of stuff for example. Or Greeks for Luxembourg. Today’s birthday boy Karel Gott could sing for his country now, but back in 1968 had to be an honorary Austrian. Was his German accent a hindrance? You tell me. I suspect he would be highly respected if ČT could talk him into singing for the Czech Republic/Czechia.

Karel is 79 today.

Frohe Geburtstag/Všechno nejlepší k narozeninám, Karel!
