6 August – I’m looking for answers

It’s always tough to open a contest. All those expectant eyes on you as you launch what should be a momentous festival of glorious song.

So opening a contest is daunting. Even more so is opening one that – at the time – had the most songs ever. Today’s birthday girl Kate Gulbrandsen did her bit in 1987 when the EBU relented and allowed a massive 22 entrants. She needed to make a good impression. A top half finish would always be nice, and she managed a creditable ninth place. Maybe it was the hair.

Kate is 53 today.

Gratulerer med dagen, Kate!
