Eurovision birthdays 30/1 – Only a gentleman has a chance

Some people out there remember the contest in black & white. I do. Not the pre-1968 stuff, oh dear me know. But those days before we took part and we had to watch the show with a dodgy foreign commentary, and Papa Riigi stood on a box holding the aeriel. Good times, but for years I thought Chanteur de charme was meant to have an instrumental break consisting of a single continuous tone. But to highlight the BBC’s role in hosting the 60th anniversary celebrations I’ve gone for a genuine monochrome contest from 1963. Was it rigged, or just sheer good luck that one Scandinavian country gave the victory to another Scandinavian country. And was it live? Who knows. Heidi Brühl would have known, but sadly she died in 1991. Heidi would have been 73 today.
