28 August – The twinkle just for you and me

Way back in the mists of time, you didn’t necessarily need a load of pyrotechnics to win a contest. Or a fancy back drop. You just needed a sympathetic orchestra and decent melody. Thankfully Mr Sobral’s win in May partly redressed that balance. But imagine how simpler things were in the 1980s. And that’s where we are today.

Denmark had a bit of a break from Eurovision festivities in the 1960s and 1970s, so by the time birthday girl Gry Johansen-Meilstrup took part they were still finding their feet. That’s probably why this particular song didn’t tick many boxes. Yes, it had a vaguely sympathetic orchestra, but that’s where the chances of winning ended. It would take a certain Kirsten and Søren to start and turn things around…

Gry is 53 today.

Tillykke med fødselsdagen, Gry!
