ESC birthdays 1/9 – Slow and steady wins the race, but only when it qualifies for the final

Kenya heart

We all live in a continent jam-packed with interesting languages. Some are mutually intelligible, and some stand alone. There has been so much choice since the language rule was relaxed in 1999. So it sometimes seems a little odd when countries look a little further afield when deciding what to sing in. We all remember Monaco’s foray using Reo Mā’ohi (Tahitian to you and me) along with French. Or France using Kreyol, which they were permitted to do in 1992. But another notable one was by today’s birthday girl Stella Nyambura Mwangi. She, being part Kenyan, sort it as only right to sing part of her song in Swahili. Now as you’ll have seen, using one of these non-European languages hasn’t exactly been flushed with success. Kali managed an 8th place, but Ms Mwangi and Monegasque Séverine Ferrer stayed firmly in their semi-finals. So maybe sticking to European is the way to go. Stella is 29 today.

Gratulerer med dagen/Furaha ya kuzaliwa, Stella!
