Eurovision Song Contest 2025 - Countdown song reviews by OnEuropeFRANCE – Maman – Louane

France pushed the boat out for the premiere of this one to an extent I don’t think I’ve ever seen before. It’s an absolutely extraordinary arena performance on a grand scale, and because of that grandiosity it actually doesn’t tell me very much that’s very useful.

I don’t think you can replicate this in Basel with six performers on stage. It’s not going to look as grand, it’s not going to sound as full and rich. I mean, you can TRY, there are tricks. Get the LED screens right and you can surround your performer with a small army, and you can feed whatever you like into your backing track.

It’s a song that would certainly work visually with just Louane and a cameraman, in the tradition of Pravi and Slimane. The one thing we can tell from Stade de France is that there are no concerns about her vocal chops, but if you’re going to do it intimate… why launch it like THIS? And why make that the only version of it the web has to play with?

I’m at a loss. This could well be a very, very special moment in Basel. It’s powerful, it’s personal, it has the potential to be the year’s winner by a distance. I do trust France to stage it right, they’ve proved at Junior and Senior alike lately that they know what they’re doing but… at the moment I have to take it on trust.

Too long didn’t read version: This MIGHT be a potential winner but based on this one performance I REALLY CAN’T BLOODY TELL. Actually, I’ll pop the lyric video in as well, it might at least give us a couple more clues what it’ll sound like.

Also, songs about your mum are notoriously risky.

Nick’s score: 10
