POLAND – Gaja – Justyna Stechkowska
Now, I’m not saying that I’ve been doing this for too long, but the first time I was present to see a Eurovision song performed live on the Eurovision stage, Justyna Stechkowska was singing it. And I’m not saying that she’s aged considerably better than I have in the meantime, but… well, no, I am saying that. She’s looking absurdly good, probably better than she did in 1995 and at this point it might be useful to know exactly who the picture in her attic is of. Answers in a sealed envelope, please, to arrive no later than 31 June 1995.
I’m in two minds about this. It’s really really good, I have absolutely no arguments with Gaja while it’s playing and Justyna is a really impressive performer of it. But for some reason, it’s not really lodged. So it’s in my “I like it, but…” pile.
As a song that doesn’t quite stick in the mind as it should, it faces a difficult and perilous path. It’s got to negotiate being on second in the semi (spoiler – it will – I mean, it SHOULD), then it’s got to be treated to a favourable draw in the final (which it might be – I mean, it CAN be), and then it’s on its own to fight it out with whatever else is there (which it can – I mean, it MIGHT).
I don’t know where this one’s going, so I’m just going to throw a dart at the board and put it in the vaguely somewhere-above-the-middle-but-not-massively-above-the-middle-but-obviously-it’s-something-where-I-might-be-wrong-in-either-direction zone.
Yes, Phil, this fence IS big enough for me thanks.
Nick’s score: 7
