Monty’s Eurovision Countdown Part 10 – Denmark

Øve Os På Hinanden by Fyr Og Flamme

There could be no greater harbinger of what was to come in 2020 that the Danish final taking place in an empty stadium as Coronavirus ran rampant around Europe. Both ominous and flat, it made for difficult viewing. The writing really was on the wall.

Fast forward 12 months and this year the action had been transplanted to a TV studio, still audience free, but without the depressing shots of row upon row of empty seats. To be honest, I didn’t feel it offered much musically; Danish hearts did not seem to be in it.

What we have is an entry riding the zeitgeist of 80s revival, one of many this year tapping into a wider trend led by the likes of Dua Lipa in mainstream pop. This gets it so right that you could genuinely see this as the Danish entry in any late 80s Eurovision line-up. There’s plenty of us fan boys of a certain age who will lap this up as well as younger fans loving the retro sound. But as fleetingly fun as it is it never really gets beyond being just a moment of happy diversion.

My marks: 6 points

Will it qualify? I wouldn’t have thought so, would you?
