Nick’s Eurovision Countdown 2021 – Romania

ROMANIA – Roxen – Amnesia

Following an unfortunate mesmerism accident in Helsinki in 2007, I ended up in a position where whenever I heard the last note of the 13th semi-finalist, I was instantly left with absolutely no recollection of the song, the performance, the singer or basically anything that had happened in the previous five minutes or so.

Thankfully that effect has long since worn off, and I now have many fond memories of… umm… of… hang on…

Now I come to think of it, I’m not so sure that there was any mesmerism actually involved.

Either way, it’s deliciously appropriate that our 13th semi-finalist this year is called Amnesia… and that with the best will in the world, it’s not a terribly memorable effort. It’s very worthy of course, and there’s always a market for a Beautiful Disaster(TM) type singer.

The running order slot has its merits, it’s the last of relatively few slows in the line-up, but it also throws up issues. The likely combined insanity of Azerbaijan, Ukraine and Malta as the closing trio creates one hell of a memory hole for someone to fall into, and that’s the trap.

Work too hard and the performance won’t chime well with the song, don’t work hard enough and it’s getting forgotten by, well, various viewers. Get it absolutely right and people will say “God, she reminds me of that Loreen! Now, THAT was a song. Euphoria! Euphoriaaaaa!!! UPUPUPUPUPUPUPUPUPUPUPUPUP!!!”

For all that it’s not really my cup of tea, I still have Roxen pencilled in for a place in the final and a respectable end result, but this isn’t a semi where anybody can take anything for granted.

Nick’s Score: 4/10
