Monty’s Eurovision Countdown Part 17 – Greece

We’re 40% into this year’s Countdown. I don’t know about you, but I’m sensing a theme here and fuck me, it’s depressing. It’s not that we have a whole heap of bad songs; in fact I rather like most of those I’ve reviewed so far. I’ve a heck of a lot of upper-middle ranked songs in my scores. It’s just that so many of the songs are quite bleak.

Surely we can count on Greece to give us that big gay hands in the air Mediterranean banger we so desperately need? Oh, wait. She’s singing about both partners in her relationship dying, to leave to the relationship permanently frozen in the state of disarray and boredom its reached. Jesus. I know we’ve been through a global pandemic but for the love of Kalomira can we not just have something happy?

Don’t get me wrong; this is lovely. Half-Greek, half Norwegian singer Amanda has a lovely voice and a pretty song, despite the subject matter. Even without the all-but guaranteed votes from Norway replacing the votes from Cyprus, who are in the other semi-final, this should be a sure-fire qualifier based on its quality alone. But I’d still have preferred a cheery banger.

My marks: 8 points
