Eurovision Countdown 2025: Georgia is earnest

Georgia
Mariam Shangelia – Freedom

There’s earnest, and then there’s Freedom, which barrels in like it’s been sent on a mission to single-handedly fix the world via three and a half meandering minutes of tonal chaos. Mariam Shangelia, a vocalist of undeniable intensity, delivers the performance as though she’s doing Les Misérables on opening night in Tbilisi—except someone forgot to write her a song.

The production is a genre roulette wheel: moody strings here, a stomp of drums there, possibly a key change that never quite lands. The vocal, oddly buried in the mix, fights to be heard beneath what sounds like three different finales from three different songs stitched together by a desperate intern. The chorus is MIA, presumed lost in an earlier version. And then it just… stops. No climax, no resolution—just a slightly accusatory silence.

In a contest that increasingly rewards boldness, this is certainly a choice. Just not one anyone needed.
