Asteromáta by Klavdia
There’s no mistaking where this one’s from. Yeah, it could be Cyprus, but it’s Greece who has been the more musically adventurous of the two at Eurovision, and so it is too this year. The national flavour of the music is complemented by lyrics which evoke the sense of kinship with the homeland, here framed as the relationship of the displaced and the refugee.
Klavdia cuts a distinctive figure, her oversized glasses inviting an inevitable comparison with one of Greece’s most famous singers, Nana Mouskouri. She performs this beautifully, with grace and elegance aplenty.
I like this, but I feel little kinship with it. Of course, it’s not speaking to me for its support – the true target is a widely dispersed diaspora which in a televote-only semifinal might just be enough to qualify. But this kind of song will always have a limited audience. I would have lapped this kind of thing up in the 90s when I was unable to get enough of distinctive female soloists, but as much as I enjoy hearing it, there’s nothing really urging me to vote, or to skip back and hear it again.
My marks: 7 points
