Survivor by PARG
PARG [sic, his capitals not mine] beings a familiar theme to his Eurovision entry: survival. It’s a well-trodden genre, triumph over adversity, often against the odds. It feels rather against the odds that PARG is even here in the line-up. I don’t mean to sound uncharitable but, well, just listen to it. PARG is a boisterous performer and watching him I get the impression that even if his survival is against the odds he’s the kind of chap that’s never wavered from belief in his own ability.
Eurovision 2025 has thrown up some unexpected trends, and PARG becomes the first performer in this year’s Countdown in the unlikely “armoured twink” category, though it’s likely he and Kyle from Norway may review their similar outfits by May. (Wouldn’t it be fun if they both adopted the same new look?) If they can claw back some savings on the costume, they might be able to afford some backing support for PARG as – surviving or not – he looks a bit lost in this sparse staging.
You can’t say he won’t be the master of his own destiny as PARG is one of the songwriters. So are 9 other people, including the composers of arguably Eurovision’s greatest modern hit Euphoria, Thomas G:sson and Peter Boström, whilst the credits list a massive 8 producers. It’s not clear if the famous Swedes have been parachuted in to try to tidy a half-baked idea into a presentable song, but you can’t imagine they’ve dwelt long on crafting this less-than-masterpiece. Survivor is a good old stomp, rowdy and defiant, and could offer an amusing moment on the EuroClub dancefloor, but I’m not sure we’ll see it surviving beyond its semi-final.
My marks: 4 points
