Voyage by Zoë Më

Time for the host entry now, and to be frank it’s been something of a mixed bag for songs representing on home soil of late. Several have ended up way down the scoreboard or even dead last. What fate awaits plucky Zoë Më who is taking up the mantle for Switzerland this year?

Zoë couldn’t be more local. She’s born in Basel which makes her very much the home girl. She’s kept quite a low profile in the selection season, her song almost sneaking out with little fanfare, and we’ve not heard much of or from her since. She has performed it on TV, suitably gentle and lovely as you’d expect.

It’s an emotional French language chanson, which seems to tell the tale of someone who’ll continue loving someone even though it feels like a one-way street. She pledges to go on the titular voyage with the other person, inviting them to join her back. It’s not immediately clear if this love is merely unrequited and something she’s dreaming of, or perhaps the protagonist in the song is trapped in a loveless relationship, with harsh words being thrown at her. Either way it’s a grim prospect for such a beautifully implored song.

In some ways I feel this is better than the French entry. It’s gentler and with a prettier tune, but Zoë seems to lack the presence of Louane, and perhaps the gravitas a Eurovision performance needs? That said, gentle songs have performed very well before, perhaps connecting better with the home audience and juries than compared to the crash boom bang we often witness when live in the hall. You feel Zoë deserves better with this than many of her fellow recent home entrants.

My marks: 8 points
