ICELAND – Roa – Vaeb
My lovely late Mum used to work at a nursery back in the 1980s. It was almost certainly completely made up (most likely by me in the last half an hour or so), but we were regularly regaled with tales of the morning when the jar of Nescafe was left open and unattended around the three year olds. Suffice it to say that nap time was NOT a success that day.
This brings me rather neatly onto the vibrant and exuberant Vaeb (I did try to glue the a and the e together but they’re not sticking), all dressed up in the year 2025 as the year 1975’s idea of what the year 2000 would look like, rather bafflingly in order to relate the tale of a little boat expedition to Greenland.
Actually, no, save that bit of sartorial exposition for now, I can use it later on. These two and their chums really look more like the characterisation of Iceland in the wonderful Scandinavia and the World cartoons, and it’s entirely possible that that’s deliberate. And honestly at my age I wouldn’t be able to keep up with them for 10 seconds, they’re like an explosion in a caffeine factory.
Now, I’m actually quite taken by this. I don’t think it’s adding anything indispensable to the pantheon of popular songwriting, but it’s the kind of good energetic fun that Iceland usually steer into safe harbour in the middle of the final night’s scoreboard, and I see no reason why this would be any different. It’s not going to come anywhere close to winning, but it shouldn’t be in any danger of coming last.
Nick’s score: 7
