MONTENEGRO – Dobrodošli – Nina Žižić
8 December 2024: Montenegro announces after a rethink that they will be represented in Basel by Nina Žižić performing the song Dobrodošli. Nick observes cheerily that there’s surely going to be more than enough time to write the review of this one hahaha!
1 May 2025: Nick gazes plaintively upon an entirely blank Word document, desperately willing some words to appear in it.
I feel like I’ve reviewed this exact song 20 times over the last couple of decades, and squeezed out the very last drop of entertainment from it 10 years ago. Probably more than that, actually – it might well have been the time that an iteration of this exact song represented Slovenia in Baku and I thought it would do really well because it always did, and… it just didn’t.
Now don’t get me wrong, I think that Nina isn’t delivering this exact song any better or worse than her predecessors over the years. It’s fine, it’s competent, it’s absolutely fine and indeed it’s fine. It’s just that it’s so very, very… grey. It might as well be there, it might as well not be there. From the draw of doom in the semifinal though, I have to be honest and say that I’ll be amazed if it picks up any points at all outside of its nearest neighbours.
It’s not bad. It’s not good. It just incessantly and unremittingly exists.
Nick’s score: 4
