NORWAY – Lighter – Kyle Alessandro
So here we are, so far behind schedule that I’m sat en France (mais quite pres de Switzerland) at une table de petit dejeuner with mes colleagues de… yeah, on balance I think I’m probably aiming to speak French at a level that makes the French start speaking English. Oui oui, je peux un peu, but mais non really.
Now, Norway. Truthfully, although this was clearly the best thing in MGP, I didn’t really notice it because I was willing Bobbysocks to be MY Bobbysocks and not the lovely-but-struggling-vocally Bobbysocks-forty-years-later.
This is good. It’s probably the best effort at a standard Eurosong of the 2020s in this year’s contest, Kyle does all the right things in the right order, sings a bit, dances a bit. Never hurts to be in a bit of light armour, too. Musically it is slightly vanilla, but stop to think about it – a really decent vanilla can be as tasty as any mango and pickled onion bundt cake that the madder chefs might create.
If it’s a year when juries and the general public are in wild disagreement leaving the road open for something that everyone somewhat appreciates… I wouldn’t bet the farm on it going all the way, but it has definitely has opportunities to sneak through the middle and get a better placing than anyone’s noticed.
A similar result to Alessandra a couple of years ago could easily be on the cards. I don’t think anybody would mind.
Nick’s score: 8
