SAN MARINO – Tutta l’Italia – Gabry Ponte

Sending a song to Eurovision in specific celebration of your region or nation is always definitely A Choice. Les Jardins de Monaco and Amsterdam were successful as they sounded quite attractive and welcoming – “Amsterdam, Amsterdam, all kinds of things are going on”. Yes, yes indeed yes Maggie, we’re well aware that things go on in Amsterdam. I Love Belarus on the other hand made it sound very much like Anastasia loved Belarus, possibly whether she liked it or not.

Sending a song in specific celebration of your region or nation, but on behalf of a DIFFERENT region or nation, is a rather different choice again. I wonder who would possibly end up doing a thing like th… oh. It’s San Marino. Of COURSE it’s San Marino. How could it not be San Marino?

Now, Tutta l’Italia came up on the rails as the theme to San Remo while I wasn’t watching because I only have so many spare weeks in my schedule in February, and for about a second I was shocked to see it parachuted into the San Marino selection until I remembered that, well, San Marino.

It’s perfectly serviceable. I don’t think it’s going to stay entertaining as long as this review, which was already struggling halfway though the second paragraph if we’re honest, but it literally only needs to stay entertaining for three minutes to do its job and proceed to the big show. It can probably do that, though it’s got to beat the curse of the DJ. Acts led by a DJ haven’t ever gone very far in the contest, unless I’ve forgotten someone.

I lukewarmly like this. It’s decent enough supporting cast, it’s clearly not a main player.

Nick’s score: 6
