Phil’s Eurovision Countdown 2025 Part 19/37 – Israel

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready…

New Day Will Rise by Yuval Raphael

Right – let’s address the elephant in the room. This song is here, it’s eligible, Kan have paid their dues and, as such, it has a right to be both seen and heard.  Having said that, though, make no mistake this is a calculated piece of propaganda by KAN.

Yuval was at the October 7th massacre and, apparently, hid under bodies to stay alive and has then been paraded on television, her first singing gig in public by the way, winning the talent show that got her here by a mile in a move that would surprise literally no-one.  KAN are now parading her in front of Europe and the story of her getting here will be told in the 34 seconds between songs. Embassies  around Europe will, again, be given SIM cards to vote this song into the final from the semi and when it gets there, which it will, it’l probably end up in the top 5.

Does the song deserve to?? Well that is the million dollar question isn’t it.  It would, in normal times, be a perfectly serviceable piece of music  which would earn a good result in its own right because it is a typical builder of a song ( and not one what whistles at bumcracks), but that is clouded by the lyrics which are covertly about the war that is going on and the loss etc. They have even written the second verse in French to get to the widest possible audience which is clever at best and calculated at worst.

I don’t know what to think about this song but in the context of the contest, it’s hitting all of the right buttons and has been clearly written with the green guide in mind.

Phil’s Score : 6 Points.

In a year where we get a lo of songs without a proper structure, Israel is sending a song with a proper and coherent structure. Musically it’s built up very nicely and never bore you. There is something French in the orchestration, and the French text(which is a translation of the 1st verse) add to the French feeling of the song .Her voice fit the song and she carry the song very well and the text reflects her personal story. She did survive(not apparently) the Nova dance festival and found strength to continue with her life.
Each one has faced a hard time and had to find his own way to continue with his life. With that she strike a cord in everyone’s personal experience.

If this song was representing a different country, it would get high marks for musicality of it. Did anyone out there , pay attention to the double modulation in the bridge, which intend as increasing emotions through the music.
Is it a good song? yes, it’s a very good song. Is it an excellent song, no it’s not. That 1st verse, ask you to be quiet and listen to the song, it takes a little time to get going, but when the 1st chorus kick in, it captures you.

The thing is, that because it coming from Israel it has been stamped as “propaganda”. And let be honest , no matter what Israel will send these days, it would always stamped as something insincere. Last year it was “political”. This year it is “propaganda”, and if Israel would have sent a cheerful song about nothing, it would be marked as “tasteless”. When it comes to Israel, we are coming with a set of bags, which influence our ability to judge the song objectively.

I admit to be bias when it come to Israel, but if they send a shit of song , I will not hesitate to call is as such(2022 and 2019 are examples from recent years, where I thought the Israeli songs were just shit). Last year, when “Hurricane” came out, I knew immediately that it was a top 5 material. In a normal year, it should have won. When it comes to this song, I am not sure where it will finish. It should finish top 10 , but I am not sure where in the top 10 it will finished. Israel want to win, no doubt. I don’t think they will get the win they want with this song. I am also willing to admit, much like last year, that an Israeli win will not be good for Eurovision.

    My points: 10 points.

    P.s.
Here are some questions for you out there:
-Will she get booed? If she does, it will mean that Eurovision “fans” have no idea what they are talking about.
-if she get booed, will there be anyone who will condemn the booing and acknowledge the disrespectful nature of such act.
-Will the juries judge the song honestly, or will they ignore the song and by that failing to judge it according to the criteria set for them?

All these quetions and many more will be answered in the next episode of Eurovision.
