Luxembourg – Laura Thorn – La Poupeé Monte Le son.
And in an original idea Luxembourg have ditched the Israeli money that propped up last year’s whole national final and went looking elsewhere. However that original idea is to hark back to 1965, and “remake” their winner with a modern twist.
Yes, it’s a modern twist and all that stuff, but is it actually good? That’s the question. Well as a matter of fact, it is. It’s familiar, without being overly so, it’s a light pop song with the “right” kind of structure that makes us older fans get very excited. It also has a chorus that makes you hum along to it and, yes, whilst it harks back to ‘65, it doesn’t reference it so much that it is pushed down your throat. It’s also another song in its national language, which is not the bonus that you would expect.
My issue with this song is that it gets old quick. It shows its hand after the first verse and chorus, and even the introduction of a middle eight and a high note are not new (and/or ground breaking) and the last part of the song is Laura just warbling on one note almost, as though the songwriters ran out of steam… which is a shame, because the song deserved a decent ending.
Overall, Technical merits are up…. Required elements are down.
