Montenegro – Nina Žižić – Dobrodošli
So, lying here in my bed In the hospital (Yes I’m still fucking here), and I’ve got this far, and despite this being one of the first songs that was chosen, once again, I could not remember what on earth this song sounded like… so I had to plug in the old IPhone and take a listen.
The first thing I have to say about the preview video is that the production is of a high standard, with all the sweeping camera movements. This put me off the song for the first verse, which is just Nina singing to camera … but props to her, because by the chorus she’s giving it heavy camera and lots of hand movements, which take your mind away from the fact she is performing basically a female Balkan-ballad-by-numbers.
It builds, it has some long notes in it, it has a bit of screaming, it has a middle eight and it has an ending – as Grace Mulligan might not say, it has all the right ingredients, but they seem to have been mixed in somewhat the wrong order, and the resultant musical cake tastes rather like cardboard than a moist sponge.
