Spain – Melody – Esa Diva
God almighty I hate Spanish Eurovision. Every yea, they trot out the same old lines about their songs being “fresh” and “modern” and “A Banger”, and they end up putting the same old shit in year after year, and their fans really *really* don’t understand why they do so badly.
So what of the 2025 vintage of “L’eau de same”?
Well you know what country it’s representing in the first few seconds, which is a lost element of most entries in this contest. The preview video is surprisingly really good, and I say that because I was expecting the whole thing to be overplayed but it’s not. Melody can seemingly sing this uptempo song really well, but my fear is that when she gets on stage, she and TVE are going to revert to type and over perform the song … but it really doesn’t need it, and I say that looking at the Benidormfest performance, which was certainly in your face. The song doesn’t need that, and yes the ‘Spanish Gays’ cream themselves over the long notes, but there is more about this song than that.
This is the best Spanish song in many a long year, even better than that Chanel thing that didn’t come second a few years ago. It has a great verse and a cracking chorus which need to be shown off, rather than a “performance” – let the song speak for itself.
Phil’s Score – A Surprising 8 Points.
