BELGIUM – Strobe Lights – Red Sebastian
I really disliked this song when it was originally entered in Eurosong 25. I couldn’t see the hype over a shouty performer singing about strobe lights.
Then I watched that national final performance where it really was the only thing viable to win and Red Sebastian really did a job on it. It’s a typical dance track which has become more prevalent as the contest has developed in the last few years and it could have walked out of the Belgian equivalent of G.A.Y with its driving beat and certain lyrics but beneath that there is a cracking little song which is immaculately performed. It has a familiar structure that people will be familiar with and those old enough to have danced with glowsticks to Cascada and the like will also be satiated.
Yes there will be people who will think it’s a “bit gay” but if you compare this to, say, Olly Alexander last year, this is much more accessible to those who like their songs “banging” without being forced to answer awkward questions from their nine year old son or daughter that they have let stay up to watch the contest. You don’t always have to be overt in this contest, covert is a good strategy too.
Phil’s Score – 6 Points.
The problem I have with this one is that his voice doesn’t have the depth or intensity to match the tone of the song. Carrying the song on his own without any assistance is a risky move.
I love good dance track which make me want to move and shake my body, this isn’t one of those dance track. It leaves me a bit cold and uninvolved.
