Zjerm – Shkodra Elektronike
Now depending on your age or your geographic location this is either “a banger” that is going to score a gamillion points, because she slays, OR, it’s just what Albania do, a shouty woman, shouting, a phrase that I seem to write so often here that I had to check I had not used it last year, and I don’t think I did, shame on me!
For this review, I’m looking at the national final performance on youtube. The first thing I notice is that Beatrice, a great name, looks like Evridiki from Eurovision 1992 and it’s a crying shame she didn’t take Teriazoume and make it her own. She’s paired with Kole who spanks an instrument at points through this performance and gives a good account of one verse in the old singing but, just as it ever was, the problems for me are that Albanian isn’t the most romantic of languages to the ear and when you, essentially, have the same hook for 2/3 of the song it gets old very quickly.
I know I’m not it’s target audience, but in a televote semi final, the jurors that this song is clearly aimed at are just going to be sitting on their hands.
It’ll get handfuls of votes from the ex-pats, the ex-pat Twitterarti and a few noble voters and it may well scrape through… but at who’s expense is the question I’m left pondering. There are at least five better songs in its half of the semi final and several more in the top half. This is NOT a sure-fire qualifier, despite what you’ve read on your social media of choice.
Phil’s Score – 4 Points
In comparison to other Albania’s entries this quite accessible. Unlike other Albania’s entries we don’t get a revamp that destroys the song.
This quite pleasant and enjoyable to listen. There are people out there who claim this going to be Albania’s best result ever. For that, this song will have to reach the top 4, as the best Albanian result is 5th in 2012. I just can see this song as a top 4 material. At best top 10 but most likely somewhere mid table result.
