CZECHIA – Kiss Kiss Goodbye – Adonxs
In complete contrast to Cyprus that doesn’t know what it is, Czechia knows exactly what this song is – in its preview video, it’s a perfect way to tell a story and, there are spoilers coming up here, it’s a song about Adonxs (or his character) losing his dad, when he left him and his family, and then getting into a programme to get back, so he can see him one last time.
Even without knowing that, and the normals that watch the contest won’t, the song itself for at least two-thirds of its length, doesn’t need that video for you to know that this is a magnum opus by Adonxs, who has a vocal that doesn’t suit his face, in a George Ezra type of way, but, again, that’s not going to matter, because the lyrics of the song are such a great piece of writing, that all they need to do is perform to the camera in a “less is more” kind of way, in order to get the hairs on the back on my arms standing up.
If only there was a stripped back version – oh, hang on….
That might be the acoustic version, but even that pisses on several plates of chips at this contest, and we know that Czech TV have said that version is nowhere near the real version on stage. I am hoping that means that the staging will be simple and effective, because with a song of this undoubted quality, it doesn’t need gimmicks to sell it. It doesn’t even need the dance break in the middle – which I reckon is there as a sop to the modern X-reading, TikTok-viewing yuff of this contest. (get rid, Kiss Kiss Goodbye doesn’t need it).
Televoters with a brain will get swept up in a piece of class, when it gets to the final, which it will, the jurors will notice the song-writing talent, and will look fondly on a song that oozes jurybait from every pore. Those televoters in the final, though, will have their senses assaulted by Sweden, Finland, Malta and others. This deserves to be Top 5 – I suspect Top 10 is more likely.
Phil’s Score – this year’s first 12 points!
As always, when a song is selected , I listen to it to get my 1st impression and and than I just leave it on the side line until I get back to it. There are some songs , I listen to more than once. this song was no different.
Last week, ESC radio was on and this song came up, and even though I have only listened to it once, when it was selected, I knew immediately that this is Czechia song for 2025.
This a strong and proper song, which has a good structure and a good melody to it. It also seems to get under your skin without any notice.
The only 2 mini-points are the unnecessary dance break and the ending. The last 30 seconds give the feeling that they didn’t know how to end the song. Otherwise, this is a really good song, which should finish high.
My points: 10 points
