1 December – Without a doubt I’ll follow you

Has the free language rule signalled the death knell for some languages? It’s true that songs in Italian and Portuguese have won in the last few years, but generally English is king. Or in the case of the 2021 contest, perhaps French still has a chance.

Today’s birthday girl Zoë Straub had tried to get to her country’s home contest in 2015 with a song in French. She didn’t get through, but it’s likely her jaunty little song might have done better than the one that beat her. Undaunted, she came back in Stockholm with this song that contained more French than the song from France. On towards the end of the Grand Final – often a good thing – she acquitted herself well, especially with the televoters of Europe (and Australia).

Zoë is 25 today.

Frohe Geburtstag, Zoë!
