24 May – When she cries, it’s the whole Adriatic

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Do you like it when a song uses geographic references in a song? Do you hope that – one day – your town, city or country will be name-checked in a song? You might have more chance if you live in the country that is hosting the contest.

In 1990, we went to what was still Yugoslavia. That gave geographically-minded songwriters huge scope for putting a Yugoslav reference in their song. Today’s birthday boy Philippe Lafontaine did that such thing. Of course, Macedonia/FYR Macedonia/North Macedonia is now its own country, but then it was a relevant reference. It also alluded to a type of salad, which may have summed up Yugoslavia very well. He did score off 10 countries, who probably got the reference nicely. It would be eight years before a Walloon song did better.

Philippe is 70 today.

Bonne anniversaire/Gefeliciteerd, Philippe!
