Phil’s Eurovision Countdown 2022 – Part 6 – Belgium

Jérémie Makiese – Miss You

This is the first song in this year’s countdown that is definitely going to benefit from the continued lack of backing group, because when the gospel bit comes in, it definitely needs the RIGHT kind of boost and not, say, five out-of-tune backing singers trying to be a gospel choir.

Inevitably, a comparison my be drawn by some (me and That Monty presumably) to Benny Cristo in both looks and the hopes that he will get his kit off, but that is also a problem. If you cast your mind back, Benny provided us with a really good recorded performance on his video and the fans (again, presumably me and Monty) thought that it was going to do really well, only for Benny to seemingly forget to sing the damn song.

If a similar fate befalls Jérémie then that too could cause his downfall. The vocal is so reliant on the hook he gives us with the glissando of the note and the end of many of the phrases, that if it all goes wrong in his ear (or in his throat), then the song is killed stone dead.

Having said that, IF he performs it, then there is a lot to like about this song. To me it feels familiar from the first time the chorus comes around, and I can’t remember for the life of me from where and that is going to annoy me from now until May – I mean it might just be generic song opening number five but who knows.

Phil’s Score – 7 Points
