2 April – May all the world’s candles burn for us

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Over the years, some countries have been gunning for a win, only for that time to pass without success. They then slip back into obscurity.

Of course, past performance is no guide to future performance. But when you look at Croatia’s record since 1993, they peak was in the 1990s. In 2000, broadcaster HRT sent today’s birthday boy Goran Karan. He’d tried in Dora a couple of times before he got the golden ticket, and in the previous two years Croatia had finished fifth and fourth. Goran went to Stockholm with high hopes and finished ninth. A drop from previous years. However, aside from one memorable occasion, Croatia hasn’t been as high as ninth since. So Goran can therefore claim his country’s last-but-one single-digit finish.

Goran is 61 today.

Sretan rođendan, Gorane!
