There have been winners and there have been winners. From those nice safe ballads, so clucks, women dancing on boxes, people ripping clothes off. And so on. And then there was what happened in 2006. Yes, there were contests as long ago as that.
We were in sunny sunny Athens, and a certain band from Finland got YLE’s gig. They were fronted by today’s birthday Mr Lordi (né Tomi Petteri Putaansuu). Eurovision had seen nothing like Mr Lordi and his pals before, so naturally they won. They scored points from 33 of 36 coyuntries who could vote for them. They were the first big users of pyrotechnics. And because of the band’s image, hardly anyone really know what Tomi looks like. That’s definitely an image to cultivate. So for those about to rock, we salute you.
Mr Lordi is 51 today.
