In these days of 21st Century contests, it’s becoming common that we’re getting alumni from the Junior version. No-one’s yet done the double, but it’s only a matter of time.
In 2023, today’s birthday girl ირინა ‘ირუ’ ხეჩანოვი/Irina ‘Iru’ Khechanovi took part for Georgia. They have four Junior wins under their belts, and Iru tasted victory as part of the group Candy in 2011. In February 2023, she won the Georgian version of The Voice, so got the ticket for Liverpool. Sadly, her previous form counted for very little as she missed out on a place in the Grand Final. She did get a maximum, and most of her other votes came from the central and eastern end of Europe. It just means we’re still waiting for someone to do that elusive double.
Iru is 24 today.
