It’s always a nice thing when a country returns to our favourite TV show after an absence. And the longer the absence, the more welcome they are. For diehard fans, it means the potential of visiting another different country.
In 1991, our friends in Malta returned to the contest after a 16 year absence. They hadn’t had the best of results in their three contests in the 1970s, but there were always high hopes on their return. Today’s birthday boy Paul Giordimaina teamed up with his pal Georgina (Abela) co-written by her husband. They had an early draw – which was less of a disadvantage in the 1990s. Could Paul and Georgina achieve the best -ever result for the Med’s happiest rock? The answer was a clear yes. A sixth place was easily the best finish, and set the stage for an even better result the next year. They even scored not one, but two maxima along the way. It was a stunning comeback. Malta still has yet to win, but you can bet they will try every year.
Paul is 65 today.
It-Tajjeb, Pawlu!
