Monty’s Eurovision Countdown 2019 – Part 26 – Moldova

Anna Odobescu

“When you can’t find the music to get down and boogie all you can do is step back in time” sang Kylie. The Moldovan song this year isn’t exactly a bop, but by gosh it’s a step backwards. It’s not a Kylie step though; she was looking for the glory days of disco. Anna Odebescu’s stepped back to what some may claim to be the glory days of the traditional Eurovision ballad. It’s certainly something you could find in almost any Eurovision line-up of the past 35 years at least, but it’s far from the right move.

After the unexpected fun of Sunstroke Project’s ‘Mama’ and the sheer slapstick delight of DoReDos, this is not only a step back but also a setback for Moldova, and enormously disappointing to boot.

As an example of its genre it’s a solid one, but as an example of a modern Eurovision song, it’s way off its mark. Let’s hope Anna makes the most of her turn to shine, but let’s also hope that next year her country people decide it’s finally time to send Doinita Gherman with a rousing old Hora.

Monty’s score: 4 points
