If you were a performer at a Eurovision Song Contest, when would you like to perform? First, to get it out of the way (and get to the free bar), or later on, once the crowd were warned up a bit?
Back in 1967, the crowd were a demure bunch, so didn’t need that much warming up. Today’s birthday girl Thérèse Steinmetz opened the show, and ringed and dinged at us for the customary number of minutes. She sold the song nicely, and got polite applaud from the audience dressed up to the nines. The other acts got the same treatment, so it was difficult for her to judge how well she went down. Once the juries had their say, she maybe felt a little hard done by. Votes from only two jurors scattered across Europe was all she could manage, Still, she didn’t finish last.
Thérèse is 92 today.
Ge feliciteerd, Thérèse!
