Phil’s Eurovision Countdown 2019 – Part 28 – Netherlands, The

Arcade

Now, all the polls and the betting tell me that at time of writing, this is the pre-contest favourite so what’s all the hype about?

Well, for the first minute, you could be forgiven for thinking you were watching Chingiz’s video from several days ago, because Duncan is underwater too.

It reminds me very much of Loic’s song from a couple of years ago – only slightly less happy – but with the same haunting melody that had, and I can almost see it on a black and white stage with yer man singing and some ethereal dancing.

I’m not sure, though, if it’s instant enough for the televoters, but those old male juries are going to lap it up as a paragon of songwriting.

Expect it to be up there, but I don’t think it has that wow factor that will make the televoters pick the phone up enough to make it the winner.  But what do I know?

Phil’s score – 8 points

I don’t get why this is the overwhelming favourite. I’m late this year listening to the songs and watching the preview videos; on first watch I found this rather forgettable.

Part of me wonders whether its elevated position in the rankings may have something to do with him being not bad looking and somewhat naked in the video. I don’t think it’s the song?

My favourite song in this year.
I got goose bumps on first listen and on other listenings it brings tears to my eyes.
It’s very emotional and the emotions are restrained and yet powerful.
You know the time that you feel so much pain and you go inward and than comes the scream and everything goes out. The verse is when you feel the pain. the chorus is when the scream comes out. However it is a restrained scream that only release part of the pain.
If they get everything right, this should do very well. And If Beautiful Mess got 2nd in 2017, this – which is more accessible than Beautiful Mess,- should do very well indeed.
I will be happy if this win.
