9 July – Hold me tight and turn the ice into snowflakes

Do you have a particular type of song? Is upbeat your thing? Are you a fan of something ‘ethnic’? Do you like a well-constructed ballad? Well, there’s always something for everyone, but today is something for you lovers of something slow.

Today’s birthday boy Mieczysław/Mietek/Miecz Wojciech Szcześniak comes from a country that hasn’t had the easiest of times in our favourite TV show. Aside from that runners-up spot on their debut, they’ve managed two other top 10 finishes. Maybe that blows the issue of a heavy diaspora vote out of the water. Anyway, in 1999, Mietek didn’t take advantage of the free-language rule (good for him), and was actually in fourth place after the end of the first vote. Things didn’t go quite according to plan, and this top-notch ballad could only manage 18th spot. He did beat two of the modern Big Five, which must count for something. This is an overlooked song, so it’s time it got the credit it deserves.

Mietek is 57 today.

Wszystkiego najlepszego Mietek!
