Love is in the air for Spain

Amaia y Alfred

These days, when it comes to talent shows, it’s all about the journey. And that’s been true of Spanish Eurovision hopefuls Alfred (sings with his eyes shut a lot) and Amaia (impressive dentistry), whose Operación Triunfo showmance delivered victory at the end of last night’s Eurovision gala.

The couple – who have grown closer as the series progressed – were declared winners with ‘Tu canción’. It’s a big swirly piano-driven ballad. In the old days, the audience would hold up disposable lighters throughout, these days it’s the torch function on mobile phone, but the effect is the same.

There were nine songs on offer last night, performed solo, as duets and at one point as a gang show with everyone chipping in. A first public vote cut the field to three:

  • Aitana – Arde
  • Aitana & Ana Guerra – Lo Malo
  • Alfred & Amaia – Tu Canción

After a second round, Alfred and Amaia picked up 43% of the vote. Aitana’s ‘Arde’ scored 31% and her duet with Ana Guerra came third with 26%.

Combined with supporting acts and guest appearances, the show had something for everyone. Everyone who didn’t have to get up early for work this morning. The result finally came at 1.30 in the morning. Not that this deterred viewers. The show picked up over three million viewers – a market share of 23.6% and massively up on last year when the peak time national final attracted less than 9% of viewers.
