A new year, with a whole new set of opportunities to get on. We know that in May someone will win the Grand Prix of our favourite TV show. In the meantime, we get oodles of national finals to come. And of course, birthdays.
We start the year with a home entrant. One who almost won. What do you mean, you don’t remember the votes going down to the last jury? Well cast your mind back to 1998 if you are able, and you will see today’s birthday girl Imaanni (née Melonie Crosdale) singing her heart our for the United Kingdom of stuff. The UK were on a roll towards the end of the 1990s and the BBC might have not thought it funny had Imaani won. She did score off every country, and was a mere six points behind the winner. This is a song still way ahead of its time and had that winner’s backing singer been less in tune, maybe Imaani would have had the win.
Imaani is 53 today.
