Mo’s Eurovision Countdown 2018 – Armenia

Sevak Khanagyan smoulders through ‘Qami’ in a video that includes more fingerless gloves and dry ice than a whole stack of Madonna promotional clips.

It takes a bit of time to get going, and actually ends up quite epic, in a prog-rock kind of way. There’s effort here and genuine talent, but it doesn’t feel like the kind of thing that will have the televoters of Brabant, Birmingham and Barcelona trying to make sense of the official Eurovision voting app.

2018 is an odd year for Eurovision. There are some true stinkers – a higher body count than usual. At the same time, I’ve found more songs that I genuinely like than in recent years (certainly more than 2017). And that’s left very little sitting in the middle – stuff I don’t mind hearing, but don’t think stands much of a chance – and that’s where the surprises often lie.

This is one of those rare middle-of-the-road songs, so I find its chances hard to call.

If all were fair in love and war, this would score highly, but ultimately, it’s not going to.
