Mo’s Eurovision Countdown 2019 – Australia

I’m still not entirely sure what to make of this. One minute I like the quirky blend of pop with something mildly operatic. The next, it annoys the living hell out of me.

At the Australian national final, it felt like viewers voted for the staging. In that live performance, the rousing backing vocals that enhance the final minute of the studio recording didn’t come across. Perhaps because there was too much going on all at once. The symbolism lacked subtlety. But, Kate can sing and she oozes charisma.

As the first songs got picked, ‘Zero Gravity’ felt like a harbinger of an unusual year for Eurovision. Since then, the line up has veered towards doggedly predictable.

The Aussies should make the final, purely because of a song with an instant hook, staging with a story and a solid performance from a woman who knows what she’s doing. This is not production line pop.

I just can’t bring myself to completely love it … yet.
