Our friends in the Hellenophone community used to have a torrid time of it. They’d be true to themselves and enter stuff reflecting their culture, and would earn few rewards.
Then in the early part of the 21st Century something changed and a win soon happened. They used a cunning mix of a contemporary sound and a Hellenic beat. This was used, among others, by today’s birthday boy Λούκας Γιώρκας/Loukas Giorkas when he palled up with the one and only Stereo Mike. Mike provided the rap, and Loukas provided the singing and melody. They did enough to win their semi-final in Düsseldorf, even beating the eventual winners, scoring off all-but-one countries. Strangely then, they only came seventh in the Grand Final. Still, winning a semi-final is no mean feat, and their in a very elite club.
Loukas is 34 today.
