Irish Wood Nymph

Molly
Molly from Ireland has wheeled her piano and her band into some wooded glade. It’s quite enchanting. I’m trying to think of the last time I saw a three-piece thumbing their instruments in a leafy exterior. It may have been somewhere near Hampstead…

Molly is playing a game of ‘let’s not look at the camera for as long as I can’ and so far she seems to be winning at that. Unfortunately in the game of ‘let’s sell my song to the audience at home’ she’s not doing quite so well, which is a great shame.

I like the simplicity of this. I like that the song isn’t trying to be anything other than what it is. I like that they’ve resisted the temptation to throw a Celtic party bag at it, not even a half-supped pint of the black stuff on top of her honky-tonk piano. But without the eye contact it might feel a little too distant.

I’d love this to qualify, it’s a very sweet and gentle song, but if it does pull off a surprise I can’t see it higher than 20th on the night.
